University of Colorado Denver - Center for Oral and Facial Health
Aurora, Colorado
The Center for Oral and Facial Health houses the clinical education programs of the School of Dental Medicine. Structural bays organize the classrooms, clinics, laboratories and offices of the 95,000-square-foot building into three zones. The west zone comprises primarily clinical space. The east zone contains didactic/educational spaces on the first floor, with clinics and offices above. The central zone includes north-south circulation and core /support functions for clinical areas. The exterior envelope is primarily masonry, particularly at the lower levels, with local campus brick and Colorado sandstone. People entering the spacious, light-filled lobby, adjacent to the main lecture hall, are drawn vertically through the building via an open staircase. Expansive glazing near areas of public circulation and occupancy draw natural light into the building. Sun-screening devices improve the quality of interior light and enrich the visual surface of the exterior wall with light and shadow. Programming, planning and architecture were provided for the project, which was designed in association with Bohlin Cywinski Jackson.
