Methodist West Houston Hospital

Methodist West Houston Hospital
Houston, Texas

A new 78-acre campus will include a six-story, 474,000-square-foot hospital, a six-story, 162,000-square-foot medical office building, a helicopter pad, a 13,000-square-foot central utility plant, landscaped parking lots, ponds with a grand water feature and multiple courtyards and gardens.

The acute-care hospital will initially open in late 2010 with 112 beds, and will expand to 193 beds to complete Phase I.   Intended to be developed in three phases, the hospital will ultimately accommodate 592 beds. When completed, the hospital will feature an imaging center, 15 operating rooms, 26 labor and delivery beds, NICU, cancer treatment areas with a linear accelerator, open heart surgery capabilities, orthopedics, a breast center and a 28-station emergency room with capacity to treat 30,000 patients annually.

The new hospital will provide a strong presence in the West Houston-Katy corridor and will give the Methodist Hospital System an opportunity to meet the healthcare needs of this rapidly growing community.   The design reflects and enhances The Methodist Hospital “Patient Experience” philosophy and the concept that the patient’s visit is considered a “Journey.”   Staff and physician satisfaction, along with maximum flexibility for the future, were also key concepts in the design. The strictest guidelines for safety were implemented throughout the design of the hospital to ensure reduction of medical errors and patient falls and to increase staff efficiency.

Large, comfortable patient rooms have been designed to promote patient safety, including sideboard bathrooms which have been placed behind the headwall, shortening the distance that patients must travel from bed to toilet.  The rooms will have comfortable family areas, along with subtle lighting, warm materials and personalized greeting boards, further enhancing the hospitality-like environment.   Traffic flow of patients, staff and hospital supplies and other functions will be separated to provide an overall quiet, restful atmosphere and patient privacy.  A grand atrium will provide natural daylight to patient rooms and other interior spaces, and an adjacent chapel will encourage meditation, reflection or quiet time for patients, family, staff and physicians.
