Fonteno Park

Fonteno Park
Houston, Texas

The Jim and JoAnn Fonteno Park exists as an undeveloped wilderness that allows the user to discover nature in the midst of a highly urbanized area. Heavily wooded, the 33-acre nature park has been designed to respond to accommodate planned as well as spontaneous activities in a preserve intended for both education and recreation.

As a wilderness nature park, the design and construction of the pavilions and pedestrian pathways had to be achieved in a manner that would minimize any impact on the environment. The predominant wetlands throughout the park required that the pavilions be raised above the ground. Circulation paths, which connect the pavilions and park amenities, are constructed of decomposed granite. Utilities are located within the pathways. Pavilions incorporate recycled decking, steel and polycarbonate light filters. The use of sustainable materials was fundamental as was the mitigation of any potentially harmful effects on the local ecosystem.
