Driscoll Children’s Specialty Clinics
Brownsville and McAllen, Texas
Two separate and different children’s clinics located in the Rio Grande Valley - one in McAllen and one in Brownsville – house pediatric sub-specialty clinics. In each of the 56,000-square-foot buildings, Driscoll Children’s occupies one-third of the building; the remaining square footage remains available for future expansion of services or leasing to local physicians.
The clinics were designed with the ability to be expanded horizontally in modules and to expand vertically by two floors. Consideration was given to ensure that multiple types of services could be provided within the facility in order to have maximum flexibility for future utilization.
Four pods, or 12 exam rooms, along with two procedure rooms, are housed in the clinic proper with anticipated patient volume estimated at over 18,000 visits per year. The layout permits conversion during evening hours to a walk-in immediate care facility. To support the objectives of the facility, ancillary services include computed tomography (CT) scanning, general radiology and fluoroscopy, ultrasound, laboratory and physical therapy, along with space for education and meeting rooms for community use.
To aid in the development of the branding image for Driscoll Children’s Hospital, PageSoutherlandPage utilized concepts, colors and imagery that are consistent and carried over from facility to facility. However, the development of the branding concept is more sophisticated than simply copying one “cookie-cutter” building design and reusing it on different sites. Each location required special adaptation of the original concepts to fit the particular site and community and to enable the patients to be able to easily access the facility, navigate through it and feel comfortable while doing so.
