University of Colorado, Mathematics Building and Gemmill Engineering Library

University of Colorado, Mathematics Building and Gemmill Engineering Library
Boulder, Colorado

The new 60,000-square-foot mathematics building houses the Gemmill Engineering Library. The building includes 50 faculty offices with support space for computer research and 60 teaching and research assistants.

The four-level massing was reduced to three exposed stories by fully utilizing the basement for study center carrels, meeting rooms and movable storage stacks with indirect clerestory glazing. A 100-seat testing lab serves 3,000 self-paced students, and a large 425-seat auditorium was designed with a 60-foot maximum sight line to the back row, assisted listening, and A/V projection. The project was the first fully compliant ADA building on campus. Included in the project program were computer/video labs and the Math Department commons seminar/lounge overlooking Folsom Stadium.
