(HOUSTON) October 6, 2009 – The University of Monterrey presented the 2008-2018 Campus Master Plan to the university community as part of the institution’s 40th Anniversary celebration. Lewis T. May, FASLA, Senior Vice President and Director of Planning for the Houston office of PageSoutherlandPage, presented the third update of the master plan, marking 35 years of collaboration with the institution since his original campus design.
“When I created the first master plan in 1975, there were no students, no funding – only a bold vision for a pioneering academic institution,” says May. “It’s miraculous to see that vision realized—a real tribute to the leaders of this University and the Monterrey community.”
Created by PageSoutherlandPage, the master plan for the 52-hectare campus was updated to assist the institution in the development of new campus facilities and open spaces, and was designed as a planning guide to address the changing needs of the University in the following years, while identifying and maximizing opportunities for growth and development. One of the main goals was to create a functional and spatial cohesive campus, integrating campus buildings and open space while establishing a pedestrian friendly vehicle-free academic core zone.
Main campus developments in this master plan include the relocation of the campus main entrance, the restructuring of the campus vehicular circulation and parking system, the creation of a campus security structure and the placing of future campus landmarks. New campus components in this master plan update include the Roberto Garza Sada Center designed by Tadao Ando, future academic buildings, student housing expansion buildings, a new health and fitness center, a natatorium, a performing arts center, the campus church, a dining hall and event center, new sport and recreation fields, a life/nature trail and a green house/tree nursery.
In addition to the original master plan, planning and landscape architecture services have been provided by PageSoutherlandPage for three campus master plan updates, a housing master plan, a learning technologies and resource master plan, a residential concept design study and capital campaign and fund raising strategies. The master plan updates have been recognized with multiple awards.
PageSoutherlandPage team members involved with this most recent master plan update include, in addition to May, Chavez, AIA, LEED, Ken Bailey and Antonio Foster.
