Arlington, TX (4 March 2011) – A dedication ceremony was held for the new 234,000-square-foot, multidisciplinary Engineering Research Building (ERB) at the University of Texas at Arlington. The ERB unites science and engineering in one facility to leverage resources, combining diverse skills and backgrounds to facilitate collaborative research.

The largest academic and research facility on the UT Arlington campus, the ERB is shared by faculty and researchers at the College of Engineering and the College of Science who are investigating, among other projects, new cancer treatments and better detection of deadly viruses. The new building also houses the Departments of Computer Science and Engineering and Bioengineering, and integrates research teams from biology, biochemistry, genomics, math, neuroscience and physics to foster new, collaborative initiatives. The new facility includes research labs, teaching labs, computer system labs, and offices for faculty and graduate research assistants for the Computer Science, Bio-Engineering and Science Departments.

The complex reflects and reinterprets the existing materiality of the UT Arlington campus through the use of red brick, limestone, glass and steel. Engaging outdoor spaces are also included for relaxation and collaboration. The Engineering Research Building is designed to meet LEED Gold standards for sustainability and incorporates several energy-saving features, including green and light-reflecting roofs, abundant natural light, rain and condensate water capture and storage for landscaping, and the use of recycled materials.

The Dallas office of PageSoutherlandPage served as Architect of Record in association with ZGF as design architect. Team members included: Mattia Flabiano, AIA; Dee Maxey, AIA;  Ken Myers, RA; Dick Robinson, AIA; Yanghee Pierce, RA, LEED AP; Wes Garwood, AIA, LEED AP; Marie Romero Hemphill, LEED AP; Bob May, RA; Frank Chung; Jonah Sendelbach, AIA; Kris Walsh, LEED AP; Brittney Lee; Lindsey Mathias, TAID, LEED AP; Lynn Broyles, PE; Alan Corley, PE;  Bill Hueter, PE;  Dale Robinson, PE; Eddy Lamb; Frank Gallegos, PE, LEED AP; Gary Adamson; Michael Bernal; Ron Wyman, PE; John Mehl and Joe Cruz.
