Discovery Green named Best Public Improvement Project at Texas Downtown Association Conference

Discovery Green named Best Public Improvement Project at Texas Downtown Association Conference Tyler, TX – November 5, 2009 – Houston’s Discovery Green was selected for the Best Public Improvement award of the Texas Downtown Association (TDA).  The winners of the 2009 Presidents Awards Program were announced November 5, at the Texas Downtown Revitalization Conference sponsored by the Texas Downtown Association and the Texas Main Street Program.  Since 1998, more than 100 projects, events and people in Texas downtowns have received statewide recognition through the awards program.

The Best Public Improvement award recognizes excellence in public projects and planning in downtowns or commercial districts.  Judges felt project designers had been creative and forward thinking by adding a green roof on the parking garage and offering excellent building designs that fit in well with the park.   Project partners were complimented on their creation of public green space that provided residents and tourists a reason to visit downtown.

Hargreaves Associates of San Francisco were the park's prime landscape architects and planners, along with Houston landscape architect Lauren Griffith. PageSoutherlandPage of Houston designed the park’s architecture and also provided MEP Engineering, LEED consulting and building systems commissioning.  Miner Dederick Construction served as general contractor.

The other finalists for Best Public Improvement were the Cesar Chavez Two Way Conversion and Esplanade in Austin; Downtown Great Streets Master Plan in Austin; and the Downtown Mural Series in Lampasas.

Judging for the awards took place in Austin.  The distinguished jury panel included the following representatives:  Linda Johnson, L.S. Johnston Architects, Austin; Susan Lassell, Chiang, Patel & Yerby, Austin; Josh Lasserre, Texas Historical Commission, Austin; Patricia Sharpe, Texas Monthly, Austin; and Sherri Zeitman, What’s the Big Idea?, Plano.
